About Kundalini Yoga
What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, is a dynamic and accessible practice that combines movement, breath work, meditation, and sound to support physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. It is known for its capacity to strengthen the nervous system, balance the glandular system, and build resilience so we can meet life with clarity and confidence.
Kundalini Yoga is suitable for people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience. Each practice is built around specific sequences of exercises called kriyas, which are designed to focus on particular aspects of the body or mind. These may include postures, rhythmic breathing, movement, mantra, and deep relaxation.
Classes begin with tuning in, followed by warm-ups, a guided kriya, and a period of rest or meditation. No two classes are the same, but all aim to create a well-rounded experience that supports balance, focus, and inner steadiness.
The word kundalini refers to our inherent potential. In this tradition, Kundalini Yoga does not aim to forcibly “awaken” kundalini energy or induce dramatic experiences. Instead, it offers steady, structured practices that safely support nervous system balance, self-awareness, and personal growth.
It is also distinct from modern “kundalini activation” modalities, which are different systems with different intentions and methods.
Kundalini Yoga is a grounded, progressive practice that helps cultivate clarity, stability, and vitality from within.
You do not need to be physically flexible or hold any particular belief system to benefit. Most people leave class feeling grounded, energised, and more at ease in themselves.
Yogi Bhajan
Yogi Bhajan (Harbhajan Singh Khalsa, 1929–2004) introduced the system of Kundalini Yoga that became widely practiced in the West. After arriving in North America in 1968, he began teaching yoga, meditation, breath work, and lifestyle practices to support physical wellbeing, emotional balance, and personal growth during a time of significant cultural change.
Over the past several years, the global Kundalini Yoga community has been engaged in thoughtful reflection about aspects of Yogi Bhajan’s legacy. This ongoing process has encouraged many communities, including ours, to deepen our understanding of the history of these teachings and to hold our practice with even greater care and responsibility.
At KYTANZ, we acknowledge the complexity of this history while recognising the meaningful impact these practices continue to have for individuals seeking wellbeing, connection, and resilience. We honour the teachers, practitioners, and leaders who carry this work forward with professionalism, integrity, and respect.
Yogi Bhajan passed away in 2004 in New Mexico. The teachings he shared, drawn from a range of ancient yogic and meditative traditions, continue to evolve as they are integrated with contemporary research, trauma-informed approaches, and the diverse lived experiences of our community.
