About · The committee

Stand for the KYTANZ committee

KYTANZ is growing. Come and help steer it.

We’ve built the foundations: a Strategic Plan, a new home online, and Rules changes ready for members to decide. Now we need people with energy, ideas and heart to bring it all to life, in seva to our sangat.

  • Nominations close Saturday 21 November
  • Elected at the AGM, Saturday 28 November

To stand, be a Professional or life member by Thursday 12 November. Not yet, or lapsed? Join or renew by then.

Who we’re looking for

A Treasurer with a sharp eye for financial accountability, ready to help set our financial direction and grow our income.

People to help drive our membership and community campaigns. You already gather people around the practice.

People to help drive our communications and social media. You already share the practice online.

A President, Vice-President and Secretary, elected fresh at every AGM.

Why now? Because it’s already working.

21 Sep A new home online. Our website and Find a Teacher directory went live on 21 September.
48 new Community members in the first six weeks.
40-day Free community practices, bringing people to the mat together, morning after morning.
About 1,800 appearances in Google search every month.

Since 2008, KYTANZ has held a place for Kundalini Yoga in Australia and New Zealand. This year we built new foundations. Next year, we build on them: more members, new practitioners, and campaigns people can feel. All in service of one vision:

“A stable ground where Kundalini Yoga practitioners across Australia and New Zealand connect, grow, and serve together.”

What the committee is for

KYTANZ is a community of practice, grounded in the teachings of Kundalini Yoga. The teachings are the bedrock: not the teacher, not the organisation. The committee holds the space where our community gathers, and the community fills it.

Everything we do is for member benefit: supporting the personal, spiritual and professional development of practitioners, from those new to the practice to trainees, teachers and trainers, through connection, integrity and shared growth. Our Strategic Plan puts that into four commitments:

  • Holding space for a diverse, inclusive and trauma-aware community.
  • Practical value, making practitioners’ lives and livelihoods easier.
  • Building connection through predictable, sustainable rhythms.
  • Embedding compliance into systems that support the work of the committee.

You won’t start from a blank page

The plan. Our Strategic Plan, plus five questions that make every decision clear and fair.

The platform. Our website, the members’ area and Find a Teacher.

The reach. Our own newsletter system and social channels.

The numbers. A monthly scorecard, so you can see what’s working.

The campaigns. Plans ready to run, and help with the writing.

The team. Every area has an owner, and two subcommittees meet about monthly. No one carries it alone. Ease and flow: if it burns people out, it isn’t the right approach.

The roles

Treasurer

Shape where our money comes from.

You’ve got a strong eye for financial accountability, and you want to help KYTANZ set a strategic financial direction. You’ll build a budget and a financial plan that grow our income and revenue, from memberships, KRI manual distribution, programs and grants, so we can do more for our members and community. It’s reciprocity in practice: our members’ support, returned as benefit.

You’ll keep accounts members can trust at a glance: payments, Xero, the year-end financial statements, and a report at each meeting. The Finance, Governance & Compliance area has your back on the routine work.

Perfect if you already run the money side of something: a studio, retreats, a teaching business, or a career in finance or business. A bookkeeping or accounting background helps, but it isn’t required. You’ll learn financial planning for a not-for-profit.

Ordinary members

Help drive our growth.

Passionate about membership, social media and growth? This is your seat. You’ll own an area of work, help drive our campaigns and help deliver the Strategic Plan, with a committee that has the tools to do it. Connection is our purpose: collaboration over isolation.

You’ll learn as you go: running campaigns, building community, reading what works. They’re skills that carry straight into your own teaching. Newer teachers, this is for you too.

Membership & CommunityYou already gather people. Do it with us.

Hold space for a diverse, inclusive and trauma-aware sangat. Welcome new members, invite lapsed members home, run membership campaigns, back our Community Representatives, and help with practice programs like a 40-day sadhana.

Communications & Social MediaTake what you do online to a bigger stage.

Keep our rhythm: the newsletter every two months, our social channels, the stories of our teachers and community, and keeping members in the loop.

Finance, Governance & ComplianceThe engine room.

Work alongside the Treasurer and Secretary on the budget, records and policies, and look after KRI manual distribution. Your path to Treasurer or Secretary.

Name the areas you’d love on your nomination form. The new committee agrees who takes which area at its first meeting.

President

Hold the circle, and be KYTANZ’s voice.

Chair our meetings and the AGM, share out the work, and lead our relationships with KRI, IKYTA, other Kundalini Yoga bodies and festivals. You’ll guide our newsletters and social media too, so the sangat hears from us. Scaffolding over hierarchy: you hold the space, and the committee and community fill it.

Perfect if you love bringing people together and can hold a steady centre. You need six months on the committee before nominating.

Vice-President

Build the systems that make members’ lives easier.

Step in for the President, lead the Membership & Community subcommittee and our Community Representatives, and look after Find a Teacher. After the AGM, you’ll lead the policy reviews that bring our policies up to date, with the Strategic Plan in view.

Perfect if you think in systems and want to make practitioners’ lives and livelihoods easier.

Secretary

Keep the whole thing running, with integrity.

The members’ register, notices, minutes and records, membership applications, the KYTANZ inbox, and our obligations to Consumer Affairs Victoria.

Perfect if you’re organised, calm and love the detail. The Secretary needs to live in Australia.

New to committee work? Good. KYTANZ is for practitioners at every stage of their journey, and so is this committee. Each area builds the skills for an office-bearer role, and you’ll learn alongside someone who’s done it.

What it takes

These are honest figures for now. It’s been a big building year, with a new website, updated Rules and a new structure. The President, Vice-President and Secretary are carrying much of the review and preparation, and after the AGM there’s more policy work to bring our policies up to date. Sharing the work across the three areas is how we’re bringing the load down.

  • Getting started 10–15 hours over your first months: reading, a welcome session and role training
  • Treasurer About 3 hours a week, more at year end (July–September)
  • Ordinary members About 5 hours a week, more when a newsletter or campaign goes out
  • Secretary About 10 hours a week, and a lot more right now: reviewing and preparing the Rules changes, policies and AGM papers
  • President Several hours most days this year: social media, newsletters and our relationships with KRI, IKYTA and the wider community
  • Vice-President Several hours most days this year, while the website, the Rules changes and the new structure bed in

Every role is seva: our way of giving back to the sangat and the teachings that hold us. It’s unpaid, and reasonable expenses agreed in advance are reimbursed. We meet online about every two months, and monthly when it’s busy.

How we’ll back you

  • A welcome session, and someone who’s done the role to learn alongside.
  • Role training and handover in February 2027.

What we ask of everyone

  • Get to know our Rules and the Associations Incorporation Reform Act soon after you join.
  • Act in good faith in KYTANZ’s best interests, never for your own or anyone else’s advantage.
  • Come to meetings on video, from somewhere quiet and private (not while driving), and send apologies when you can’t.
  • Declare any personal interest in a decision, and step out of it.
  • Keep members’ personal information and non-public committee business confidential, during and after your time.
  • Help keep the committee a safe, inclusive and professional place: treat everyone with kindness and respect, including when views differ, and take a concern to the person or through our complaints process.

How to stand

  1. Be eligible: a Professional or life member aged 18 or over, joined or renewed by Thursday 12 November.

  2. Nominate online on the AGM page and name the areas you’d most like to help with. Nominate yourself, or ask a member to nominate you.

  3. Do it by Saturday 21 November. Online, it goes straight to the Secretary. Can’t use the online form? Fill in the paper form (PDF, opens in a new tab), sign it and send it to the address on the form.

To stand for President, you also need six months on the committee before nominating. The Secretary needs to live in Australia.

Know someone who’d be brilliant? Send them this page. Any member can nominate an eligible member, with their agreement.

The week between nominations closing and the AGM gives us time to say hello, answer your questions and welcome you properly. Want to talk about a role first? Contact any of the office bearers.

Community Representatives are KYTANZ’s link with the sangat in each region. They sit outside the committee, and the committee appoints them as needed after the AGM.
